2025 OPERATOR CHALLENGE: PRECISION MEETS COMMUNITY PRIDE
The 2025 Western States Operator Challenge was held in Liberty Lake, Washington on June 19. Operator Challenge only happens once every three years, making it a highlight competition for operators across the region to showcase their expertise and compete for the chance to represent Western States on the national stage.
Four Challenges, One Winner
16 skilled operators went head-to-head in four machine-based challenges designed to test accuracy, safety, and speed. Each task demanded not just mastery of the controls, but strategic use of machine technology—from Grade Control to Payload systems—to navigate and complete each course efficiently.
Operators competed on a wheel loader, dozer, excavator, and backhoe, including two centennial gray machines—Caterpillar’s custom-painted dozer and loader honoring the brand’s 100-year milestone. Adding to the modern edge was a Cat Simulator backhoe challenge, bringing the latest virtual training tools into the fold.
The Victor: Cwentin Clifton
When the dust settled, Cwentin Clifton from Elite Construction + Development in Pasco, WA claimed the top spot. With 25 years of experience in the seat, Cwentin combined technique, confidence, and precision to win the event and advance to the regional competition in North Carolina. If successful there, he’ll earn a spot at the global finals in Las Vegas in 2026.
Community Vibes
The event wasn’t just about the operators—it was a celebration for all. Western States opened the course to the public, inviting families to enjoy food trucks, kid-friendly activities, and “Touch-a-Truck” experiences that gave kids a chance to climb inside real equipment. The community atmosphere brought extra energy to an already exciting day, highlighting the pride and support behind every operator in the competition.
